We are beginning 2023 with a few classes and a couple of events. Scroll down to "What's Happening" for the latest.

OUR STORY
Studio 9 Mosaics is a communal space shared by 10 mosaic artists: Randina Casenza, Jill Stevenson Ritter, Carla Trujillo, Glynnis Kaye, Ilse Cordoni, Marthe Gump Murray, Liz Willams, Margaret Cechetti, Debbie Callen and Cynthia Lee. In addition to private workspaces maintained by the group members, the studio hosts classes, workshops and ‘studio time’ open to members of the public. The studio is located in Suite 9, 2020 Dennison Street, Oakland, CA, just off the 23rd Avenue exit on Highway 880. There is a lot with ample free parking in front of the studio.

Events at Studio 9

DAVID JARVINEN COMING IN JUNE!
$125.00
$45 mat fee due in class
10-4pm
This workshop has great fundamentals included for building mosaic bases using packing foam to add depth & texture. A great way to upcycle packaging materials. Our methods are different and allow us to skip the mesh! Less steps always better for time management and profit if you sell your art. Our image is desert related but can be anything...a tree or abstract with depth... and all is doable with imagination! Project measure approximately 11 x 17". Students are provided with sheets of Styrofoam to create their base.
WEDI FISH/BIRD/WHATEVER SCULPTURE
$295.00
$65 material fee due in class
Saturday & Sunday 6/10 & 6/11
10 -4ish
We are back to bring the Fish/Bird/or Whatever Sculpture! In this fun workshop we will begin with a 12x12 1/2" Wedi board. Then, draw your design...yes come prepared with your image if you can. Then we cut out for a negative space around it, then work with wire, smalti and glass tile to bring your sculpture to life. This is a great class that combines many techniques to learn from.

ABORTION QUILT TRIANGLE SESSIONS
Our January session of triangle-making was a HUGE success. Studio 9 is committing to sessions every other month.
Claire Barnett at Seattle Mosaic Arts is putting out a nation-wide call for mosaic artists to participate in creating mosaic triangles that will be "sewn" into a large diamond “quilt” becoming a mural promoting reproductive rights for women. Here is a description:
"Access to safe abortion care is critical to all of us. Even if you have not personally had an abortion, without a doubt someone close to you has. This beautiful community mosaic project visually demonstrates how abortion is part of all our lives. The concept for the quilt is simple. People mosaic small 4” triangles to represent the impact abortion has in their lives and then these small triangles are pieced together into an ever-growing mural. The colors represent the different ways abortion affects us: Orange (I had an abortion), Yellow (my partner had an abortion), Green (a family member had an abortion) or Blue (a friend had an abortion). Our hope is to transform this local project into a national movement. Once people take time to understand how abortion has directly impacted their lives personally it will be very hard to continue to legislate against abortion access. It takes 128 small triangles to create this 5’x3′ diamond. These ever-growing diamonds will then be “quilted” together to create a stunning, powerful mural that can travel around the country, encouraging more people to contribute their own triangles. Please help us showcase this reality by adding your “color” to this quilt".
We will have bi-monthly sessions. Our first three are as follows (we will add more dates in the future):
Sunday March 12th
Sunday May 7th
Sunday July 9th
Session 1: 1:00 - 2:30
Session 2: 3:00 - 4:30
No cost, but a donation to an organization that supports and promotes women's right to make their own reproductive decisions (without her husband, doctor and a member of congress!) is welcome and encouraged.
This is a very simple project, no mosaic experience necessary.
PLEASE READ if you are interested in attending:
Email Randi at info@studio9mosaics.com for sign up or more information.
If you want to bring a friend, family member, etc., please, one email to sign up everyone in your group. If everyone signs up individually, you might not all get in.
Be sure when you sign up to specify which session you want to attend, 1:00 or 3:00. Signups are first come, first serve, so if I have to ask which session you want, you may lose your spot.

FRIDAY LABS ARE BACK BEGINNING MARCH 1ST!
We are bringing back Friday Labs beginning March 1st!
Treat yourself to a weekly mosaic break. Bring your project and materials, and we will provide tools and adhesives.
Friday mornings, 11am – 2pm
$20 drop in or $150 for a 10-lab card. Pay in person, cash, check or Venmo.
To sign up, text 510-295-3344.
NOTE: Labs are not classes. You need to have one beginning mosaic class under your belt, or basic mosaic-making know-how (you know how to cut glass, how to use adhesives, etc.) We are happy to answer questions, offer advice or refresh your memory on the finer points of cutting glass or what color grout to use, but there will be no actual teaching.
Labs are held at:
Studio 9 Mosaics, 2020 Dennison St #9, Oakland
